Streaming Quality Calculator
Calculate the required bitrate for streaming any resolution and frame rate on Twitch, YouTube Live, Facebook Gaming, or any platform. Find optimal OBS settings, estimate data usage per hour of streaming, and understand quality vs bitrate tradeoffs.
Live streaming requires encoding video in real time at a specific bitrate that your upload speed can sustain. Choosing too high a bitrate causes buffering for viewers; too low results in blocky, low-quality video. Platform limits, upload speed, and encoder CPU all constrain what quality is achievable.
Bitrate determines video quality in live streaming. Unlike recorded video, live streams cannot be encoded multiple times to optimize quality โ the encoder must keep up with real-time video capture. Higher bitrate gives better quality but requires more upload bandwidth and may overload older GPUs/CPUs.

Platform Bitrate Limits
Each streaming platform enforces maximum bitrate limits: Twitch: 6,000 Kbps standard (8,000 Kbps for partners). YouTube Live: 51,000 Kbps maximum (supports 4K streaming). Facebook Gaming: 4,000 Kbps recommended, 8,000 Kbps max. TikTok Live: 2,000-4,000 Kbps. Higher bitrates only help if viewers have sufficient download speed.
H.264 vs H.265 vs AV1
Modern video codecs achieve the same quality at lower bitrates: H.264 (x264): universal compatibility, highest bitrate needed. H.265/HEVC (x265): same quality at 50% lower bitrate, but higher CPU/GPU encoding load. AV1: 30% better than H.265, used by YouTube but limited hardware encoder support. For Twitch: H.264 or H.265. For YouTube: AV1 hardware encoding (NVIDIA RTX 40 series).
Frequently Asked Questions
For Twitch 1080p60: use 6,000 Kbps (Twitch partner/affiliate limit). Non-partner limit: 6,000 Kbps. Use x264 or NVENC encoder. Required upload speed: at least 8-9 Mbps (bitrate + overhead). Settings: x264 veryfast or NVENC, CBR mode, keyframe interval 2 seconds.
Required upload speed = Streaming bitrate ร 1.2 (20% headroom). For 6,000 Kbps Twitch stream: need at least 7.2 Mbps upload. Stable upload speed matters more than peak speed โ test with Speedtest.net during your typical streaming hours (peak congestion times reduce upload speed).
For most streamers: Encoder: NVENC H.264 (NVIDIA GPU) or AMD VCE. Bitrate: 6,000 Kbps (CBR). Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. Preset: Quality (NVENC) or veryfast (x264). Resolution: 1920ร1080. FPS: 60. These settings give excellent quality on Twitch while keeping CPU/GPU load manageable.
Pixelation occurs when bitrate is too low for the motion and detail in the scene. Fast movement (games, sports) needs higher bitrate than static scenes. Solutions: increase bitrate (if upload allows), reduce resolution/FPS, use a better encoder (NVENC quality preset), or reduce motion in your scene (simpler overlays, lower FPS).
Data per hour = Bitrate (Mbps) ร 3600 / 8. At 6 Mbps stream: 6 ร 3600 / 8 = 2.7 GB/hour uploaded. A 4-hour gaming stream = 10.8 GB upload. This does not count download traffic (incoming video calls, game data). For regular streamers, an unlimited internet plan is strongly recommended.
Twitch currently limits video quality to 1080p60 for viewers, regardless of stream resolution. Streaming in 4K to Twitch is wasteful โ transcode it down to 1080p. YouTube Live supports true 4K streaming up to 60 fps at up to 51 Mbps bitrate. Stream 4K on YouTube if that is your platform.
