Calculate what your ping (latency) means for different online activities โ gaming, video calls, streaming, and VoIP. Estimate server distance from ping, understand jitter, and learn what latency is acceptable for your use case.
Ping measures the round-trip time (RTT) for a data packet to travel from your device to a server and back. Lower ping means more responsive connections. For competitive gaming, every millisecond counts. For video streaming, even 200ms ping is perfectly acceptable.
Ping (or latency) is the round-trip time in milliseconds (ms) for a data packet to travel from your device to a server and return. It is measured using the ICMP echo request/reply protocol. Unlike download speed (bandwidth), ping determines how responsive your connection feels โ critical for real-time applications like gaming and video calls.
| Ping | Rating | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| < 20ms | Excellent | Competitive gaming, day trading |
| 20-50ms | Very Good | Online gaming, video calls |
| 50-100ms | Good | Casual gaming, HD video calls |
| 100-150ms | Fair | Gaming playable, some lag |
| 150-250ms | Poor | Noticeable lag in fast games |
| > 250ms | Very Poor | Unplayable for real-time games |
Common causes of high latency: geographic distance to the game server (physics limit โ light travels 200 km per millisecond), WiFi vs wired connection (WiFi adds 1-20ms of variable latency plus packet loss), ISP routing inefficiency, network congestion, and old/slow routers adding processing delay. Wired ethernet consistently reduces ping by 5-30ms vs WiFi.
Jitter is variation in ping over time. A connection with average 40ms ping but jitter of ยฑ30ms (ranging 10-70ms) feels worse than a 60ms ping with ยฑ5ms jitter. High jitter causes rubber-banding in games, choppy audio in calls, and inconsistent performance. Jitter above 30ms is problematic for real-time applications. Wired connections have near-zero jitter.
To minimize gaming latency: use wired ethernet, connect to game servers nearest your location, enable QoS on your router to prioritize gaming traffic, update router firmware, use DNS servers with low latency (1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8), close background applications, and consider a gaming VPN if your ISP routes traffic inefficiently.
