Grade Calculator
Calculate your exact course grade based on weighted categories โ homework, quizzes, midterms, finals, and participation. Enter your scores and weights to see your current grade, letter grade, and how much each upcoming assignment affects your final grade.
Teachers and professors assign different weights to different types of assessments. A final exam worth 40% of your grade impacts you far more than a homework assignment worth 5%. Understanding weighted grades helps you prioritize your study time and effort strategically.
Formula
Final Grade = Sum of (Category Score ร Category Weight) / Sum of Weights | Example: Homework (85% ร 20%) + Exams (90% ร 50%) + Final (78% ร 30%) = 85.6%
How Weighted Grades Work
Most courses use a weighted grading system where different assessment categories contribute different percentages to your final grade. A typical college course might weight homework at 20%, midterm exams at 30%, and the final exam at 50%. Your performance in each category is multiplied by its weight to calculate the overall course grade.

Strategies for Maximizing Your Grade
Focus energy proportional to weight. A 40% final exam deserves 4ร the study time as a 10% quiz. Homework assignments, though individually small, are often easy points โ missing them consistently tanks your grade even with perfect exam scores. Check your syllabus carefully: some courses drop the lowest quiz score, allowing one bad day without penalty.

Frequently Asked Questions
Multiply each category score by its weight (as decimal), then sum all results. Example: Homework 88% ร 0.25 = 22, Midterm 82% ร 0.35 = 28.7, Final 91% ร 0.40 = 36.4. Total = 22 + 28.7 + 36.4 = 87.1% = B+.
Rearrange the formula: Final Score = (Target Grade - Sum of other weighted scores) / Final Weight. If you need 70% overall, currently have 65% on non-final work (worth 60%), and final is worth 40%: Final Score = (70 - 65ร0.6) / 0.4 = (70 - 39) / 0.4 = 77.5%.
Impact = Assignment Score ร Assignment Weight / Total Course Weight. A 100-point assignment worth 5% of your grade: a 0% vs 100% on it changes your final grade by 5 percentage points. A 40% final exam: 0% vs 100% changes your grade by 40 points โ potentially 4 full letter grades.
Our calculator shows your current grade based on completed work. Uncompleted assignments are excluded โ weight is automatically redistributed. Your actual grade will depend on future assignment performance. Use the Final Grade Calculator to see what score you need on remaining work.
Extra credit adds points to your total without increasing total possible points, effectively raising your percentage. If you have 850 points out of 900 possible (94.4%), and earn 10 extra credit points: 860/900 = 95.6%. Even small extra credit significantly helps borderline grades.
It depends on remaining course weight. If midterm was 25% and you scored 50%, you lost 12.5 weighted points. If remaining work (75% weight) earns 90%: final grade = 12.5 + 67.5 = 80% (B). Failing one exam is recoverable โ consistent strong performance in remaining work can overcome it.
